SAIL AI Policy

SAIL recognizes that students must learn how to use AI tools appropriately and honestly. Parents are encouraged to discuss appropriate technology use at home. The following is an overview of how AI tools may be permitted at SAIL.

This policy is not limited to well-known AI chat bots such as ChatGPT or Google Gemini but also applies to tools that utilize AI technology such as Apple Pages, Microsoft Word, Grammar.ly, etc.. If there is any question of what counts as inappropriate use of AI tools, the Board of Directors or teacher has final discretion.

  1. AI tools may not be used if they are bypassing the learning process by doing the thinking, reading or decision-making for the student. All work must reflect the student’s own effort and understanding.
  2. Students must receive prior permission from the teacher before using AI tools, clearly explain what the purpose is and note which tool was used.
  3. Approval will be based on whether the AI use supports real learning and meets assignment expectations.

Acceptable Uses of AI:

  1. Brainstorming ideas or topics.
  2. Reviewing or practicing class content.
  3. Checking grammar, spelling or word choice in the student’s own writing.
  4. Summarizing notes written by the student
  5. Getting explanations of concepts

Unacceptable Uses of AI:

  1. Submitting AI-generated work as your own
  2. Writing full essays, paragraphs or short answers using AI
  3. Completing homework, quizzes or tests with AI
  4. Copying AI responses without understanding or revising them
  5. Using AI to summarize assigned texts instead of reading
  6. Allowing AI to revise an essay to the point of erasing the student’s own individual voice.

Examples above are a non-exhaustive list.

Consequences For Violating the Policy: Depending on the severity and frequency of the violation, consequences may include: verbal warning; restriction of AI tool access, loss of credit for the assignment; parent/guardian contact; conference with teacher, administration, student and parent; removal from the class without refunds.
